Manchester
Bulge has been around since 2002. They played their first
show as
a duo at a concert to benefit the Moorhead State Painting
guild,
and went on five minutes before the bar closed, hiding behind
a
table stacked with effects pedals, tape machines and a small
practice
amp plugged right into the PA. It took them two minutes
to clear the bar
of everyone except a tiny group of stunned art
students and sound man
>Mike
Dagen. Mike liked their stuff so much he asked them to play
more
shows in the future and ended up getting the Bulge 95% of
their shows
over the next three years, earning him the title
"Nicest Guy in the Fargo
Music Scene".
These shows
included the First Annual Fargo Winter Carnival, which was
to
prove pivotal to the development of the Manchester Bulge sound.
Mike
had asked if they could play a quieter set for the Carnival;
the group had
already been considering incorporating more acoustic
elements and
traditional instruments and therefore decided to make
the Winter Carnival
performance as acoustic as possible. Using
scrap metal, contact mics,
acoustic guitar, violin, recorder and
organ, the group got their most positive
crowd response yet, and
through a fluke involving a panicked reporter who had
slept in,
made it onto the six o'clock news. After the show they once
again
picked up their tape machines, effects pedals and
amplifiers, but a lasting
change was made upon their compositional
style. Their pieces became more
dynamic, incorporating sparser
passages juxtaposed against the traditional
noise freakouts. Which
brings us to the Manchester Bulge sound of today.
